Funcom to release open-world Dune game

Funcom, the Norwegian game developer best know for Age of Conan, Anarchy online and the Secret World has signed a six year deal with Legendary to make at least 3 games set in Frank Herberts science fiction universe Dune.

“We are very excited to announce an exclusive gaming partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a line of video games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s Dune,” Casais said. “Dune is one of the world’s best-known science fiction universes and a personal favorite of mine. To work on Dune games is a dream come true for many of us in Funcom.”

Not much else has been said other than that one of the games will be an open world game. Although given the history of Dune games it is likely that one of the others may be an real-time strategy game. The games will be released on PC as well as consoles.

This news comes in the wake of Legendary getting ready to release a new Dune movie within the next year or so. The movie boasts a cast of some heavy hitters including Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista and many more.

In August of 2018, Gale Force Nine a company known for making tabletop games and miniatures announced a partnership with Legendary as well to poduce a tabletop version also set in the Dune Universe. The game will span the many novels written by Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The tabletop game is due out sometime this year.

Dune is one of my favorite sci-fi series and I am one of the few people on the planet who truly enjoys the 1984 movie Dune directed by David Lynch. So don’t screw this up Funcom.
